Tree Insect and Disease Control in San Angelo, TX

Insects and disease don’t wait. We use targeted systemic treatments and contact sprays to stop the problem at the source and prevent it from coming back.

Protecting San Angelo Trees from Insects and Disease

Prevention is always better than treatment. Trees that are properly watered, fertilized, and maintained are far less likely to develop serious pest or disease problems. But when insects or disease do take hold, targeted treatment can often save the tree if you catch it early enough.

Flynn Tree Service provides insect and disease control for residential and commercial properties across San Angelo. We diagnose the specific problem, identify the pest or pathogen, and apply the treatment that addresses it directly. We don’t guess and we don’t blanket-spray.

Insect Control

Most tree insects in San Angelo are manageable with the right approach. After a big rain followed by heat and drought, chewing insects like aphids, webworms, and leaf-chewing caterpillars can emerge quickly, especially on pecan trees. For these surface pests, we use a contact spray like Talstar Pro (bifenthrin) that’s effective on contact and safe for people and pets once it dries.

For deeper, longer-lasting protection, we apply systemic insecticide through soil injection or drench. The product we use is imidacloprid, applied at a higher concentration than most companies use. The tree absorbs it through the root system, and it protects against chewing insects, sucking insects, and bore beetles from the inside out. One application lasts a full growing season.

Bore beetles are the most serious insect threat to trees. They’re attracted to stressed and declining trees and can sense cell structure breaking down from a distance. Once they bore in, their larvae girdle through the wood and can kill the tree. Systemic treatment is the best defense against bores, applied before the tree is already in decline.

Disease Control

San Angelo hasn’t seen widespread outbreaks of the devastating tree diseases found elsewhere in Texas, but the risk is real. Oak Wilt is present in Central Texas and has been found in isolated cases in our area. It’s a fungal disease that attacks oaks by invading the vascular system. The tree responds by constricting its own cambial tissue in an attempt to block the fungus from spreading, but this response often ends up killing the tree.

Oak Wilt spreads two ways: through root grafts between nearby oaks, which is the fastest and most lethal path, and through sap beetles that carry the fungus from infected trees to healthy ones through bleeding wounds. Preventive treatment is possible if applied early. In an urban setting where the tree is near structures, our recommendation is removal and proper disposal of the entire tree to prevent spread.

Other diseases like hypoxylon canker can appear on drought-stressed oaks. Proper watering habits, mulching to retain soil moisture, and regular fertilization are the best preventive measures for keeping your trees resilient.

How We Treat Tree Insects and Disease

01

Diagnose the Problem

We identify the specific insect or disease affecting your tree. The treatment depends on what we're dealing with, and a wrong diagnosis means wasted time and money.

02

Apply Targeted Treatment

Depending on the problem, we use systemic soil injection for long-term insect protection, contact spray for active surface infestations, or pruning and removal for diseased limbs and infected trees.

03

Prevent Recurrence

We recommend a maintenance plan that includes proper watering, fertilization, and periodic inspection. Healthy trees resist insects and disease far better than stressed ones.

Tree Insect and Disease Control FAQ

Common signs include yellowing or browning leaves outside of normal seasonal change, holes in the bark or sawdust at the base (bore beetles), webbing in branches (webworms), sticky residue on leaves (aphids), fungal growth at the trunk base, or a sudden thinning of the canopy. If you notice any of these, call us for an assessment. Early detection makes treatment far more effective.

A systemic drench is a method of applying insecticide by mixing it with water and pouring it directly into the soil around the tree’s root zone. The roots absorb the product and distribute it throughout the tree’s vascular system, protecting it from the inside out. This provides longer-lasting protection than surface sprays and is particularly effective against bore beetles and other insects that feed within the wood. We use imidacloprid applied as a soil drench or injection for season-long protection.

Oak Wilt is a fungal disease that kills oaks by attacking their vascular system. It’s widespread in Central Texas, particularly around Austin and the Hill Country, and isolated cases have been found in our area. It spreads through root connections between nearby oaks and through sap beetles. If you have oaks on your property, preventive awareness matters. Avoid pruning oaks during spring and summer when sap beetles are most active, and seal any pruning wounds immediately. If you suspect Oak Wilt, call us for an assessment before it spreads.

For preventive systemic treatment, one application per year during early spring is typically sufficient. The product stays in the tree’s system through the growing season when insects are most active. For active infestations, treatment timing depends on the specific pest. Contact sprays for aphids and webworms may need to be reapplied after heavy rain. We’ll recommend the right schedule based on your trees and the problem we’re addressing.
